Religion = different colour hair?

I know the title doesn’t make sense, but bear with me for a moment…First a bit of background.

I’m a girl who has been Christened to be a Lutheran. I spent my first ten years in Finland, where religion is taught as a subject in schools. Then I moved to Singapore, a melting pot of religions. As a young child, I wasn’t that religious to begin with (I just thought it was kinda cool that I could get into a place with fruit trees when I died).  We never really went to church, except for weddings, funerals and such, and my parents have never been very religious.

In the past five years, I have become what you might call an Agnostic. It is hard to believe in something when it says that all your friends will suffer in hell for an eternity. Thus, though I’m still basically a Christian, there is much in it that I doubt or find to be complete rubbish. In fact, I’m reluctant to truly call myself a Christian anymore. It’s not that I believe that there is nothing, but that I can’t know and in the end it shouldn’t matter that much anyways.

I see religion as a group of people in a deserted house in the middle of nowhere. Everyone is staring at the door, some more intently than others, except for a few people who are playing cards, occasionally glancing at the others. The people staring at the door all think someone is going to come, but they can’t agree on this person’s hair colour. One of them is insisting that it is brown. Another thinks that it’s black, and someone else believes that it is blond. A radical even suggests that it has been dyed pink. They all have faith in their own belief. None of them have any proof, except for a few discarded pieces of paper saying “Someone is there” and poems on the virtues of different hair colours. Not everyone thinks that a single person is coming. Some say it’s a group of people, maybe even a whole bickering family. Others think that no-one is coming, or simply don’t care. Those are the people playing cards, though some of them are keenly insisting that no-one will ever come.

Suddenly, someone tries to compromise, “Maybe it/he /she/they is /are bald!”. Unsurprisingly, most of the people in the room are horrified. The card-players have varying reactions. Some nod, some shrug, some giggle. A man, the one closest to the door stands up. “You are dishonoring my faith! He will come with glorious locks of black hair! So it is said on this mystical piece of paper!”

Some people are hopeful and the thought of the person gives them joy. Maybe he/she/it/they will bring food. Others are scared that the guy will kill them and send them to suffer for an eternity which is, as we all know, a heck of a long time (I stole that from Rowan Atkinson) . Occasionally, a fight breaks out, but for now it seems calm enough. Hopefully.

I am in the room, chatting with all the people, occasionally touching on the issue of the hair colour, but other things as well. Like if anyone knows if we’re gonna get food anytime soon. Mostly I  just play cards, though, and ponder upon who was it that brought the playing cards to the deserted house in the first place. I gotta thank that person. I wonder how we got to the house…Oh well. Everything will be fine. If only I could get some food…

You may agree, you may disagree, but how is religion that different, really?

Oh, and I forgot to say that most people think they ought to be nice or something. You know, so that the guy will come give them food and they won’t be thrown into a super-cool huge fire. That’s a plus I guess, as long as they don’t interpret it as them having to throw others into a fire so that nice stuff will happen..

Thank you for reading (?),

P.S If you’re wondering why I suddenly switched to ‘the guy’, it’s because the he/she/it/they thing got tiresome. So there.

P.P.S I don’t believe in hell. You probably guessed.

Musical Stuff

Oops! Over 3 weeks since my very first post….I have excuses, though: mocks, mocks, mocks…

I would say sorry, but since there isn’t really anyone to say sorry to, I think I’ll just move on.

I really do use ellipses too often, don’t I?

Anyways, recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Korean music, because it’s just so catchy and the music videos are so cute! Some groups I’ve listened to include Wondergirls , 2ne1, Girls Revolution and Kara. I especially like Nobody, I don’t care, Lollipop (here I mean the one by 2ne1 and Bigbang, not one of the millions of other songs called lollipop, though some of them are nice too:)) Gee, and Honey.

I have also started listening to bubblegum pop pieces, which I never thought I’d like, but it’s actually pretty fun to listen to (Doctor Jones and Tarzan and Jane, anyone?). I’m not sure if Jenny Rom fits into this category, but I think she probably does…anyways, I love Senorita and Game of Love! They are perfect dance music, as well as background music for AMVs. Does anyone else think that her music is quite Japanese-like even though she is Italian? You can easily imagine an idoru dance based on the music. Maybe it’s just me.

While I’m going on about musical stuff, I just have to mention that I got a distinction for my singing exam! All the world rejoice! Okay, maybe I’ll just rejoice on my own…I really thought I wasn’t going to get a distinction, especially considering what I did with my last song. I just stopped before the last verse, all happy, thinking I had finished. It was only when my teacher gave me an alarmed look that I realized I still had one more verse to go! Well, then she improvised a bit and then I joined her playing again to sing the last verse. I was so embarrassed! Plus, I really messed up the whole memory thing they have on ABRSM aurals. Oh well, I guess it was just my charming personality, not to mention my shining *cough* modesty that gained me the marks. d: I really hope the smileys aren’t putting anyone off. Well, at least I’m using correct grammar (I think), so that should not be such a big problem :).

Hmm..I don’t really have anything more to write, so I’ll just end it here 🙂 This turned out to be a pretty music-centered post, so maybe I’ll write about something else next time (hopefully sooner than after 3 weeks).

Ta 4 Now!

[insert witty title]

Hello my nonexistent readers! (since this is only my first post, I can assume that, can’t I?)

As you can see, inventing titles is not one of my strong points, so don’t expect anything too witty…Actually, I don’t have anything really interesting to say, but I felt somehow that it was my duty to write something, if for no other reason, then just to get something else than “Hello World!” here. (What are we, programmers?) ‘Nyways…I’ll just say random stuff about myself. Since this is my first post, I won’t bother thinking if I’m boring or not. Here goes:

  1. I’m a girl
  2. I’m from Finland
  3. I’m living in S’pore
  4. If you have read the “About” stuff, you will know this already
  5. I love, love, love music
  6. I play the viola
  7. I sing
  8. I love reading
  9. I play the piano
  10. I…will not tell my age, but I am still in school, just if anyone’s curious
  11. I love chocolate
  12. I should really be doing my sci writeup now…so unfortunately this list ends here.
